Jennifer R. - Internship in Japan

September 29, 2014

Germany Student - 2014

I made an internship at Wood Toys store in Fukuoka, which is focusing on European toys and self-made Japanese toys. The Japanese toys are made by Yasuko herself, wherefore she also offers courses for people who are interested in her work.

My main aim for the whole internship was to improve my Japanese language skills. Further, I wanted to become familiar with the daily work at a toy store.

In the first week, I had to translate the toys instructions from German to Japanese.
This was quite difficult for me, because I had no experience in this field and especially these two languages are very different. However, with the help of my colleague I could handle this task. Additionally, I also could improve my Japanese a lot through to the fact that my sentences were corrected step-by-step. Further, I talked to costumers about the different games I played in my childhood and also about general topics like Germany.

Moreover, every week I was writing some essays about different topics and presented them at the blackboard. I designed an information sheet with my personal experiences and added some photos. Once, I also wrote an article about the Advent time in Germany. This article was published in the monthly flyer of the company. All these essays and articles were corrected by the Haradas themselves. Therefore, I could improve my Japanese a lot.

Especially the close relationship to Germany was an big advantage for me, because I could help my director with his communications to German businesses.

In conclusion it can be said, that my four week internship at Wood Toys was a whole success. I could improve my vocabulary, my sentence structure and my whole Japanese language skills wherever writing or speaking. Further, I have got an insight view to the work environment.
As the business has a very pleasant atmosphere and took always friendly care of me, the whole internship was very good and a great experience for me.
